Vinny sat down beside the other boy, eyes wide as he curled up again, Beauty and the beast is one of my favorites, even though Simon says it's a girly story, he mumbled, blushing slightly. He didn't want it to seem like Simon wasn't a nice person, because he was a nice person. He was Vinny's favourite person in the whole wide world, except from his family. But people usually had problems with Simon, and they were always so surprised to find out the two boys were friends.
Vinny always supposed it was because Simon had horns and sharp teeth. Or the fact he lacked a tail, or, half a tail.
The small blonde boy cuddled up to Samuel more, closing his eyes as he listened to the other talking about medication. I don't mind taking them, mommy says they'll make me better, he said beaming up at the taller boy. Vinny always did what his mother said, no questions asked. He had only seen her upset once and he was determined not to ever see her cry again.
Biting his bottom lip slightly, he nuzzled his face against Samuel's chest, pushing the boy onto his back so they could cuddle better. What medication do you take? he asked, unaware that it could be a very personal question.

Well i suppose it is a little bit girly, but I don't care! It's my favourite fairytale and i don't care if it's girly, he said, folding his arms across his chest in a huff. Laughing, he sat back, allowing Vinny to curl up beside him. Already he was getting used to the boy's close contact, and really, he wasn't that bothered by it. Vinny wasn't going to hurt him anytime soon, he was sure of that.
Samuel sighed, That's what my mum told me. Except they didn't make me better, he murmured, staring up at the ceiling. In fact, his mother had told him that several times over, with every different type of pill they made him take. None of them worked, none of them made any difference. The only ones that worked a little bit were the ones he was on now, but that was only when they were combined with his other tablets.
Samuel stiffened, uncomfortable with this personal question. Umm..well... he stuttered, before closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. Vinny was trustworthy, and anyway, who would he tell? And so what if he did tell? People were bound to find out sooner, rather than later, about his..condition... Antipsychiotics, amongst other things... he said, unwilling to divulge the fact that he took far more illegal drugs than was probably good for him. But if it helped him stay calm and in control, surely it was a good thing...?

Oh Vinny began slowly, noticing how Samuel had stiffened slightly at the mention of his medication. I don't really know what I'm taking...it changes ever few months because they thing of new things to make me better, He smiled, nudging the other boy with his elbow. We can take them together, you'll have to remind me sometimes because I'm really forgetful... He blushed, looking down at his feet.
So....how come you have to take medication? are you sick...or? he asked, laying his head on Samuel's chest, his fingers tracing shapes on the other's stomach. He hadn't seen anything wrong with Samuel, when the boy had walked in. Sure a shadow had followed him, but everyone had a shadow following them. It wasn't unusual...Samuel did have a bare tail - almost like a rat...maybe that meant something? Nah...that's can't be right.

Samuel smiled, stroking Vinny's soft hair. It was oddly soothing, this position. Something about Vinny just calmed him down. Perhaps it was his childlike nature, or the fact that Samuel felt unthreatened by him, he didn't know, but he knew that Vinny would be able to keep him calm if he ever felt his grip on reality slipping. And he certainly didn't want that to happen.
Although Samuel wasn't entirely aware of his 'alter ego', he knew that he could turn nasty, and through the many psychiatrists he had seen, he had been taught to notice certain signs about when he was going to loose control, things like his hands beginning to shake or his temper becoming shorter. But the worst thing of all was when he couldn't calm himself down and everything went black. He would 'wake up' as it were and not remember anything, sometimes it was a few minutes, but sometimes it stretched on for hours or even days. A light shudder ran down his spine as memories flooded his mind, one particular memory sharper than the others..... But no, he wouldn't think about it. That only led to pain, and Samuel didn't like pain.
That's a good idea, Vinny, he said, forcing a smile on his face. Although sometimes i have to go outside to have some of my medication. I don't want to smoke the room out, after all. He'd already had one cigarette in here, he could tell from the smell, although he didn't quite remember having one, and the room was far too small to deal with him smoking on a regular basis. I'll make sure to remind you, though! We can remind each other, that way we can both get better together, he said, although his words sounded hollow. People didn't 'get better' from things like this.
Samuel sighed, his eyes closing as Vinny traced patterns on his chest, calming him once more. You know how you were talking about the shadows, how they make people do bad things? Well, i've got a...darkness.. inside of me... And bad things happen when it comes out. The medication helps me to stop that..darkness.... he said, trying to explain his disorder in a way that Vinny would understand. But sometimes it doesn't work, he whispered, talking more to himself than the boy curled up next to him.

Vinny was so excited to be having a new friend. One he could share things with for real, sure Simon was the best friend that Vinny had ever had, but Simon didn't have to take medication, Simon didn't understand the way these things worked like Samuel would. Vinny smiled to himself, scrunching up the material of the boy's shirt in his little fist before letting it go and smoothing it out again.
I don't mind you smoking in here, Simon always does...he just opens the window. He said I wouldn't like the smell of it, Vinny said, resting his chin on Samuel's chest so he could look at the boy. Hey don't be sad, Vinny said, frowning a little as he used both of his hands to push Samuel's lips into a smile. Everybody has darkness in them, he explained carefully, not wanting to offend Samuel in any way.
You just have to make sure it doesn't fill you up. he said slowly, returning to play with the other boy's shirt. Pills can't stop the darkness, Vinny said, not looking at Samuel now, but rather at his drawings on the opposite wall. Only light can stop the dark, he said, shrugging slightly, as though his wise words were nothing but normal. Maybe that's why they don't like white stars! Because white stars light up the whole sky! Vinny said, returning to his excited state from earlier.

Samuel smiled, glad that he wouldn't have to track downstairs everytime he wanted a cigarette or a joint. Thanks, Vinny! Now we can definitely take our medication together, and we won't forget. He smiled, briefly wondering who Simon was and whether he was in fact a real person. But no, he remembered briefly talking to a Simon on Chat, so he must have been a real person.
His lips automatically lifted into a smile as Vinny pushed them up, a light chuckle escaping his lips, I guess they do, he murmured, thinking about how all people were capable of doing bad things. Maybe Vinny was right, maybe there was darkness in everyone but it was just stronger in other people. He smled at Vinny's explaination; how he envyed the boy who seemed to be so happy in his own world. You're right, Vin! Without the stars at night, the sky would be full of darkness. Maybe i'll just have to wear several stars on me, to keep the darkness at bay, hey?
He relaxed into his bed, glad that he had been able to explain his condition in a way that Vinny would understand. And of course Vinny accepted him and didn't run away, he had no need to. Umm...what about you, Vinny? he asked, tentatively, not wanting to upset the boy in any way. What happened to you? he asked, continuing to stroke the boy's hair.

Vinny slipped his thumb into his mouth, closing his eyes slightly as he nuzzled his head into Samuel's hand, wanting to boy to play with his hair. Vinny had always found little things like that soothing. He thought about Samuel's question for a moment, not really sure where he should begin.
When I was younger... he began, taking his thumb out of his mouth and wiping it on his shirt. I was out with my sister, and my dad. He had walked on ahead to get the car and we were following. We got...distracted by...a cat or something.
Scrunching up his face he buried it against Samuel's side, his voice becoming a mumble. ...Somone...attacked us. They...hit me with...something, like a bat...or...I dunno a crowbar? Vinny sat up suddenly and lifted up some of the hair on the left side of his head. There, hidden away was a long scar from the front, right round to the back of his head.
I woke up in hospital about a month later...and...then I could see things. The tails the doctors had, extra eyes, extra ears, everything was...different. Vinny laid back down again, curling up against the other boy. I don't know why it changed, I wish I did. Doctors said I was lying, they think I'm...I dunno...mentally unstable, that's why I have all those pills.
Vinny sat up again, crossing his legs and leaning against the wall. I sometimes wish I was normal...I think I'd have more friends then. I mean, it's not that I'm nasty...people just don't bother seeing past what I can. Y'know? I'm sorry if I'm too...close. Simon says not everyone likes it. You just have to say, if I am. I don't get to hang out with many people...I miss hugs...I miss cuddles... Vinny brought his knees slowly to his chest, wrapping his arms around them. He could feel a red tint to his cheeks from embarrassment. He didn't like it.

Samuel chuckled softly, twirling the boy's hair around his fingers. However, his happy mood was cut short when Vinny began to tell him what had happened to him all those years ago. Listening to his story, Samuel could feel an anger bubbling up inside him, the strength of which surprised him. How long had he known this boy? An hour? Maybe two? Yet he couldn't imagine why anybody would attack an inoccent young boy. Clenching his fists together, he gritted his teeth, How could somebody do that to you? he said, his anger spilling out, causing his voice to become almost like a snarl. Do you know who did it? I'll fucking kill them! - a strong statement, but Samuel knew that if he ever did find the person who had done this to Vinny, he probably would act upon it.
Closing his eyes, he took a few calming breaths; anger didn't combine well with the whole trying-to-keep-control thing. He mumbled an apology for getting so angry, before looking at Vinny's scar. It certainly was impressive. Gently he ran a finger from the start to the finish, concern filling his eyes. I'm so sorry, Vinny, he whispered, pulling the boy into a hug. He couldn't get his head around the fact that he felt so close to Vinny so quickly. It normally took him so long to trust people, let alone willingly touch or hug them!
Nobody's normal, Vin, he said, smiling. And i'm used to your closeness now. I'm sorry i let it bother me earlier. I'm just not...used.. to it. His time in juvie had taught him to keep himself to himself and not let anybody close and despite having been out for nearly 2 years, he had kept up his 'loner' act in order to protect himself. It was just easier that way. You can hug and cuddle me as much as you like. And i haven't met any other people yet so we can stick together. He smiled and pulling Vinny back to him so that they were in the same position as they had been earlier. See? I don't mind anymore. he said, hoping to reassure the boy.

Vinny's eyes widened, he could see Samuel's temper rising, he crawled next to the boy and pressed his nose against the Samuel's cheek. Don't be angry with them. You don't know why they did it. What if they had family to look after and needed money? Vinny smiled and accepted the hug, curling up on the other's lap like a small child.
He yawned a little and nuzzled his face up against Samuel's warm chest, his nose brushing against the soft material of the other's shirt. You don't ever have to apologise to me, we're best friends. he said, eyes closing a little as his small hands curled around Samuel's shirt clinging to the other boy as much as he dared.
Looking up at Samuel he smiled once more, bringing his hand up to touch the boy's cheek where the star was starting to peel away. Will you tell me a story now? he asked, slipping off Samuel's lap and getting to his feet. I want a story about you, he said, smiling at the other boy. His hands slipped down to the hem of his shirt where he thumbed the material, unsure if Samuel would get angry again. He didn't want that to happen. Or Beauty and the Beast, your choice.

Samuel sighed, contentedly, feeling the anger leave him as Vinny snuggled into him. What was with this boy?! Somehow he had broken through all of Samuel's usual barriers and gone straight into his heart. But Samuel didn't feel angry at Vinny for being able to do this. In fact, he was almost glad that the boy had gotten through. It was oddly comforting to have someone to hold, someone to talk to - even if that someone was slightly insane.
I could tell you a story about me, he said, running his fingers up and down Vinny's cheek, But they aren't very happy stories... Some people don't get to live fairytale lives, Vin. He chuckled, rather bitterly, I don't want to give you nightmares, after all! But if you want a story about me..Hmmm He tapped his chin with a long, slender finger, trying to think of a story from his childhood that wasn't going to upset or freak Vinny out too much.
There once was a boy called Samuel, whose parents loved him more than anything in the world. They gave him everything and anything he wanted, without so much as a blink of the eye. When he was 6 years old, he asked to have a bath in baked beans, and his father let him, because he never said no to Sam - Sam was his golden boy. So, after filling the bath with beans, the boy slipped into the bath. It was cold and slimy, but Sam loved it! None of his friends' parents would let their children have baked bean baths! The beans got everywhere, in the boy's hair, in between his toys, but he didn't care. And neither did his father, for who could be angry at a boy whose face was lit up so brightly? Sam felt like he was the luckiest boy alive. He chuckled, remembering the feeling of the beans all over his body, it had been a weird feeling! But Samuel hadn't had a fairytale childhood, and the story didn't have a happy ending.
But Samuel hadn't told his father that his friend was with him. Now Charlie wasn't a very nice friend, he made Samuel do things that he didn't think were right and sometimes he made Samuel hurt people. But Sam couldn't stop Charlie, because he was strong and manipulative, even at 6. Charlie didn't like the feeling of the beans all around him and so he made Sam scream at his father, calling him all sorts of naughty words. Charlie didn't like Sam's father or his mother, because he could see the lies behind their fake love. He made Sam jump out of his baked beans bath and throw the beans all over the floor. Needless to say, Samuel's father wasn't happy and that was the last time that Sam was ever given what he wanted when he wanted. And from that day, Samuel's parents began to stop loving their 'troublesome' son. And so, Sam didn't live happily ever after.

Vinny listened intently to the story, smiling slightly when Samuel mentioned the baked beans, something he had never wanted to eat because it had looked too slimy. He crawled back onto the bed next to Samuel, laying down so his head was in the boy's lap. He frowned a little, taking Samuel's arm and wrapping it around his thin body, So Charlie was wrong? Vinny asked looking up at Samuel. And mommy says that parents never stop loving their children, even though my sister says that my parents don't love me very much because I'm weird.
Vinny yawned and rolled back off the bed, I think I need to go to bed now, he said, giggling slightly. Without shame, or even thinking about Samuel he stripped down to his boxers and crawled into Samuel's bed, waiting for the other boy to join him. We can cuddle, can't we? he asked, blinking owlishly at the other boy, suddenly aware that maybe Samuel didn't want another boy in his bed.
Since his accident, Vinny had been prodded and poked in so many ways. He had stripped for so many doctors that being in just his underwear was no issue for him. He would have stripped completely, but Simon had told him not to. So he didn't any more, because he always did what Simon said. Because Simon was his best friend.
