And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This was very much Julia's kind of place. She was never much good at newer games, but give her something from the 80's and she'd never stop playing. She didn't know why she didn't really expect something like this to be in Vegas, but it was a very pleasant surprise. Sometimes, she would just stand by a group of games and close her eyes, listening to the sounds. Other times, she was watching someone try the new machines that happened to be out...but mostly, she came here for one game and one game only--Defender. She'd been playing Defender since she was very small and her mom set up an emulator for it on one of their home computers. Every time she plays, she gets a little better, but she's never actually won. Obviously, not because she doesn't like the game--mostly it was just that she didn't have the long term focus. It didn't feel like there were too many people here other than her, which was sort of a let down. She wanted so badly for this place to survive so she'd have somewhere she felt comfortable and happy in for long periods of time. The only other place she felt like she could handle was maybe the book store, but it was usually so full of students during test times that she had to get out of it fast. The music here wasn't half bad, either. Sometimes she'd ask the owner of the place for a list of what had played so she could check it out later...even when the music was pop it wasn't too soulless and boring. At the moment, Julia was sitting at a chair against the wall, watching some people interact with each other while she had some soda. She'd played a good hour or two of Defender earlier and was just sort of winding down, trying to figure out what she was going to do. Anything was better than being home alone while her mom was on a trip. When he needed a place to calm down and blow off steam, he walked to the arcade and terrorized the pinball machines. Today was one of those days. His entire mind was focused on the small silver ball that had the nerve to ping back and forth mindlessly without scoring any points. He had very little control over it, and this infuriated him to no end. When at last the ball dropped neatly between his fast-moving plungers, he groaned loudly and slid down in front of the machine, deciding wiether or not to play another game. The arcade was almost deserted, which was disapointing, but also a great relief. Eli had come here to get away from people. His sister had called him with news that had disturbed him beyond the calming affect of his morning joint. He took a deep breath and stood back up, rumaging in his pocket for another quarter or two. Finding none, he swore quietly and glanced around. A girl sat against a wall with a soda, harmlessly. She looked familiar, but he couldn't place exactly why. Eli looked over the other people in the room and decided she seemed like the best bet to get a quarter off of. "Hi there, uh I was wondering if I could borrow a quarter?" He asked, smiling in a reasuring way. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •TAGS! Julia NOTES! And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Julia had been lost in her own little world until she heard the voice of a stranger. Normally, she'd end up taking the sudden sound pretty casually...but unknown reasons ended up making her jump and almost spill soda all over one of her favorite shirts. Good thing she caught that in time. That would've been kind of embarrassing. It took her a couple of minutes to realize what it was that he'd just asked. "A quarter? Oh uh. Yeah, actually, here." She reached into her bag, searching around for a slight while before pulling out a small container and pouring out a few quarters, handing them to him. She didn't even seem to mind how many of them there were. "Don't worry, you really don't have to repay me," her glance went up to him, shaking her head gently. "It's kind of nice just knowing people actually still come here and keep this place running...."It probably sounded like she worked here or something. Why was she always unsure of her first few sentences with a stranger when she probably was never going to talk to them again? "Not that I work here or anything." Great. Make yourself sound defensive. That was a good tactic. "I know what you mean," He sighed. "No one goes to hole-in-the-wall arcades like this anymore? It's all that new crap that are all impossible to win and just eat your money." Eli raised an eyebrow at the girl. "Even if you did, I'm not knocking it. I'd love to work here!" He said, honestly. "The atmosphere is, like, uber chill, you know?" He felt like a dumb teenager as he spoke, slipping back into his slang-filled half English as easy as pie. Who needed 'this is quite impressive' when he could just say 'this is rad maaaaan'? It was just more fun to shorten his words and elongate his vowels. "I'm Eli, by the way...Just so you know," His voice was very casual and friendly and he stuck out a hand at the end. "Thanks for the quarters...?" A questioning tone at the end made it obvious he was stumbling for her name. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •TAGS! Julia NOTES! And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Because spending craploads of money is the cool thing to do in Vegas," Julia couldn't help but laugh slightly at this. She never really understood the draw to all that gambling that tended to happen. Real video games were actually rewarding once and a while. "It's really sad."She smiled a little at the way he explained the atmosphere and nodded slightly. "It's one of the million reasons I come. The people who work here seem so normal compared to a lot of people I run into," She paused, realizing she probably was rambling quite a lot. "I'm Julia. Or Juli. You know. Whatever's easy to remember, really." Julia shrugged, looking at him with some interest. He felt very familiar, but her brain wasn't making the connection for some reason. Probably just a regular she'd watched once. She took his hand, shaking it, realizing that was the thing to do in this sort of situation. "And, you're welcome." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before we pine away ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Money was one of those things that he always ended up loosing when he went out on the town. Vegas was just a town run by Benjamin's and Washington's. He nodded and listened to her rambling, not minding. He found her company soothing compared to the intense pinball game he'd been involved with only moments before. "Normal? I didn't know anyone in this town was normal," He joked, but saw her point. The arcade didn't have men in feathers and glittery dresses, and if the did, it was a game or something. The owner was also pretty cool, and let people just hang around a while after they ran out of quarters, which Eli did quite frequently. "Julia, huh? Do I know you? You seem so familiar?" Eli asked, shaking her hand, and finally voicing his deja vu. He'd met this girl before, he had to have....but where? And when? • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •TAGS! Julia NOTES! None TEMPLATE CREDIT! Arro @ Caution 2.0

And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Oh thank god. She wasn't the only one feeling the dejavu. And, she wasn't even the one who had to voice anything, either. "I uh....don't really know." She paused, trying to think of places she might've been seen...but it wasn't like she really had that much of a life. "I mean, are you here a lot? Because that could be it. I'm usually over there," She pointed over to the defender machine with a small smile. "I'm kind of addicted to that game...."She looked to him, trying to study him, to see if the answer would smack her in the face with a glance, but it really didn't. "Otherwise, uh. I guess I could've been around...or online or uh."Those seemed to really be the only plausible answers to both of their question. She shrugged slightly, "Anyway, most likely, it's just that we're both here a lot," She laughed a little, realizing she was taking that question far too seriously. "It's actually not often that I see a lot of the same people around," she continued, not really getting that this particular point of the conversation could have probably ended a while ago, "I mean, people show up talking about how interesting it is or whatever, but then you never see them again..."She shook her head, deciding to try to push the conversation forward rather than pulling it back the way she seemed to sort of want to. "So, how long have you known about this place?" Well, it was a start. Not a very interesting start, but a start nonetheless. He thought about it, and lately, he had spent a lot of time here. "Defender? You don't look like you'd be into that kinda thing," He admired her almost immediately. He had no patience when it came to games like that, and preferred ones that were quick stress relievers. "I'm not a big online person, I can barely work my phone, much less a computer!" He smiled at his words, which were the truth. He wasn't very technically savvy, in fact all he knew how to do on his phone was text and play Bloon Tower Defense 3. Sad, but true. "Exactly, I think if more people saw how cool this place was, they'd never want to leave!" Eli glanced around the arcade, at the various games and lights. It was second nature just to be around a place like this, and he felt a twinge of sadness when he thought about how it might not last through the changing world's preferences. Some people preferred Xboxes to old school video arcade machines, and while Eli loved his game console, he also adored playing on the original systems. "Only half a year or something; it's amazing though!" Elijah smiled and nodded toward Julia. "What about you? You seem pretty comfortable here," • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •TAGS! Julia NOTES! None TEMPLATE CREDIT! Arro @ Caution 2.0

And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Well, I may not look it," she paused, laughing just a little bit, "but I'm pretty much an ubernerd. Especially when it comes to oldschool games. I'm best at Defender and Joust, but for some reason, they don't have Joust here.""Oh man," she smiled slightly, hoping he was going to be able to tell she was joking. "Someone whose life doesn't surround the computer? I can't conceive how one would even do that."She paused, trying to figure out how long it'd been since she'd discovered the place. "Well, I don't know...it was one of the first things I noticed when I moved, though." She smiled once again, "There was an arcade sort of like this back in New York...main difference is the New York one played a bit more varied music." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before we pine away ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elijah asked, grinning. He'd never heard that phrase before. and now that he had, he knew he would have to find another situation to use it in. Eli knew most people in this generation revolved around technology, and when they heard that he didn't even have a facebook, they just about died. He found that kind of thing a big waste of time, and never really latched onto the addiction of WoW. He had other addictions to deal with. "You're from New York? That's amazing! What's it like?" He asked, earnestly. Eli had never really gotten off the West Coast, so people from anywhere past Texas intrigued him. Vegas seemed to be a melting pot of all different people and places, and Eli never grew tired of hearing their stories. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •TAGS! Julia NOTES! And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Julia couldn't help but smile a little bit at his reaction to her wording. She really didn't know why. Part of her had kind of assumed other people used that phrase, but apparently they didn't. Or, at least, they didn't use it around here. When the question about what New York was like came, she shrugged softly. “It's basically like a lot of other cities....except you for some reason have a higher chance of being mugged there than even around here.” She hadn't really experienced that herself, but her mother had a few times here and there....it was one of the main reasons they'd moved. It was too much to stress about. “The people are pretty chill there most of the time, though,” she continued, trying to say something a bit more positive, ”I mean, you still get the closed minded idiots, but mostly, people are cool with differences and that kind of thing.” Her only problem with being there had, oddly enough, been the people. Most of the time that she spent trying to make friends ended up with them just taking advantage of her kindness. ”What about you? Have you been around here your whole life or what?” She wasn't quite sure why she'd asked—it seemed rather obvious that at least he'd been in the same general area for a while, but she decided she'd end up asking anyway. That sounds pleasant," Eli replied with wide eyes. He listened politely as Julia described the people around New York, and shrugged when she asked about him. "I moved here to escape my family, I'm from Oregon. Born and raised in Portland." He didn't expect her to know where that was; Portland, Oregon wasn't very well known, and most people didn't even know where Oregon was! "Above California?" He would say, still getting blank stares from whoever he spoke to. Portland was his hometown, and he missed it everyday he stayed in Vegas. It was hot and stuffy here in Nevada, as opposed to Oregon's cool and rainy climate he was used to. The people were different too, and he missed the laid back hippies that he used to hang out with when he lived there. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •TAGS! Julia NOTES! And let the words spill through, let them pass right through, Bringing out our hope and reason ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------”Yeah, it's insane. Thank god I didn't have to deal with any of that, though I did get worried whenever my mom would come home suffering from a panic attack...” She shook her head, letting out a soft sigh. For all the good things New York had been known for, there were certainly two times as many bad things to even it all out. She smiled slightly at the mention of Portland. ”Portland, huh? I've heard wonderful things about that place.” She nodded as if to verify her own statement. “Apparently they've got one of the first Rocky Horror Picture Show casts still running over there or something...” Of course that would be one of the only things she knew about. She laughed, ”Wow, I just realized how lame it is that that's all I know besides the weather...”Julia wasn't too fond of the hot out here, either. She much preferred cold to this, but at least she'd been promised it snowed once and a great while. It was something to look forward to. She'd finished her soda a while ago, really, and was kind of trying to talk herself into getting another one. Part of her thought it would be rude, but then part of her thought that that was absurd. She shook her head to try to quiet down the slight thought from her head and decided to make it easier for everyone. ”Hey, I was going to get another soda, would you like something?” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Before we pine away ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
