If the bombs go off the sun will still be shining; Because I've heard it said that every mushroom cloud has a silver lining.

The sun was shining brightly as Sairah pulled back her curtains and flung open the window, breathing in the fresh air with a smile. It had been too long since she had ventured outside, all the talk of frat parties and frivolous hook ups had her running for cover. She was, quite possibly, the most pathetic of the popular group. She hated parties and drinking, and she actually knew how to read, so she did not see a reason to sleep with her professors.
With her homework safely done, and checked, (and rechecked), Sairah found herself with spare time and nothing to fill it with. What could she do? Most of the young adults she knew were busy with their lovers, which seemed to be the craze right now. Again, Sairah was the odd one out, having never been kissed, and enjoying her life as a single woman. Or at least, she was very good at pretending such.
The park was within her comfort-zone distance, and with this sun, maybe she could get a little reading done in the lush grass, without the hideous giggling and hushed whispers that usually followed her when she went with her friends. She was half an of clothing more from the conservative girls that were the victims of the endless needling that Sairah's group gave. Somehow she managed to stay on top, making excuses for why she wasn't dressed like a street walker and why she didn't have a new man every week.
She slid into a pair of shorts, ones that ended right above her knees, and a strapless blue top, before finding a pair of flip-flops and a battered book about the connection between children and animals, one that she had yet to get completely through. Today would be a day for her, a day of relaxation, without the stress of school or the pressures of her peers.
A short drive later, she was sprawled on the grass, engrossed in the book, happy as a clam to be out of her dorm. Yes, today was going to be a good day.

Rufio never spent more than an average amount of time at these average parties with the average people he was forced to socialize with. He didn't mind finding himself in one corner, drink in hand, eyes glazing over the other people. It wasn't too much of a problem for someone who rarely connected with anyone and spent more time with his ferret than any human beings.
That morning he had slipped out of dorm room, mostly un-noticed by his hungover peers, and taken his bike; guitar strapped to his back he cycled to the park. Rufio had never owned a car, nor did he feel the need to get one. His bicycle was fine - and if it was an even shorter journey he had his roller blades or his street board. He had no used for a car, it was a waste of money - in his opinion. Though he didn't care if anyone else had one. Personal preferences and all that.
Cycling into the park was a more difficult task, dodging the running children and the parents trying to gather them up. The oversized push-chairs with chattering mothers. The grannies who walked at a snails pace, and the dogs that couldn't sit still for more than thirty seconds. Rufio smiled, shaking some of his hair out of his face as he cycled past two older ladies sitting on a bench. Rufio! Be careful on that bike, don't want you damaged for the fate tomorrow! one of them called as he waved a hello. I won't Mrs B, I'll be there! he replied as loud as he could so they could hear.
Chuckling slightly to himself he veered off the path and onto the grass, jumping neatly off the bike and letting it fall to the floor. Looking around he saw a couple of people reading, some children playing on a swing set and a puppy out with it's owners. Cute. He smiled to himself, settling down on the grass. Turning slightly he spotted a girl nearby, blonde hair, nose buried in a book. He wrinkled his own slightly, maybe he was a little close to her? He didn't want the guitar to disturb her reading. He paused for a moment, well, he reasoned, she would always tell him to shut up if he was too loud.
Settling his guitar on his lap he began to play, picking at the strings, trying to stay quiet. Just in case.

No one else seemed to be very enthused by science, not like she was. It was thrilling to think that with the advances in modern technology, soon there could be cures for the most feared diseases. Parents could customize their children from in the womb. No longer would genetic disorders plague the world. The blonde didn't necessarily believe in all that, but it fascinated her, none the less.
'Super humans' were a personal favorite for her. The concept that a human could be strengthened, and made immune and almost invincible against mother nature's forces kept her reading and studying. It wasn't her major, but she felt just as passionate about genetics as she did about becoming a surgeon.
Autism and animals, was today's adventure in print. She wasn't very big on children, but if there was a connection between the young humans and the animals that aided them, Sairah was more than happy to read about them. Veterinary science was her last resort, but that certainly did not mean it would be too much of a sacrifice for the girl.
Sairah was turning the page, excitedly starting a new chapter, when the soft strumming of a guitar's strings began to drift through the air. She glanced up and found the creator of the sound quickly. Sairah smiled, enjoying his music, forgetting her book for a brief second.
"You're very good," She said aloud.

Rufio was almost too lost in his music to hear what the girl had said. But he just about managed it. He stopped playing and smiled at her, waving her over to him. Thank you. he called back, straightening his legs and re-crossing them as he waited for her to come over.
Do you play? he asked, as he started picking another tune. A more familiar one that hopefully she would recognized. Rufio was often asked to learn popular songs to play for his friends. It was always good when you knew the latest songs to impress people. But Rufio had to admit he wasn't really into that sort of music. He didn't hate it, he just, didn't love it.
Biting his tongue he looked over the girl, she seemed normal, but she had an air about her. She wasn't like him, that was for sure. She wasn't a nerd either...she was like Dorian...just a bit more precious than anyone else. But he couldn't put his finger on why. Rufio knew it was rude to ask, so he didn't. Instead he smiled at her and nodded a proper hello, I'm Rufio, you're Sairah, right? I saw you at the induction week - you're taking...sciency stuff? Physics? he asked with a grin. Rufio had an unusually good memory for that sort of thing.

The boy waved her over, and she felt rude to deny the invitation. So with nimble fingers, she dog-eared her book and stood, a bit wobbly from lounging in the grass for so long. She made her way to the boy, smiling, and sat down next to him.
"Me? Play? Oh, heavens no. I'm tone deaf,"
He started a new tune, something that rang a bell in the back of her mind, but she couldn't remember the name. Ask her to name all the bones in the human leg, and she could do it in one breath, alphabetically, if you wanted. But when it came to mainstream, normal topics..well, she could hardly remember today's date.
"Wow, you've got quite the memory," She said, in disbelief. "Most people can't even remember my name!" Laughing a bit, she took a moment to look the boy over. Friendly enough, nice clothes, and quite a knack for remembering details that many cast aside as useless. "Is it genetic?" She asked before she could help herself. "Oh, I mean, your memory, like how well you can recall things? Wow, that sounds really nerdy, sorry. Just ignore that," She blushed, embarrassed, and looked away from him, trying to think of something to cover for her comment. "Uhm, what about you? I assume you're in music, because you're simply amazing,"
