FAMILY: Janice Tomlin(mother:surrogate) -- Jason Tomlin(father:deceased) HISTORY: People always say that when you are born, you have this strange favoring towards one of your parents. Some children are their mother's, others are their father's. Jaylen was most certainly a daddy's girl from the moment he first held her in his arms. Of course, Jaylen didn't really have any other choice. Her mother had no connection to her whatsoever, having been just a money-hungry surrogate with no love for the baby at all. She didn't stick around. Jaylen's father, Jason, had lost his first and only true soulmate when he was just a teenager to a drunk driver, and swore that he would never marry again. "When she left this earth...I think she took a piece of my heart with her. And I can't just give the rest to someone else. It wouldn't be fair." He would always say when Jaylen would ask why she didn't have a new mother. It wasn't like she needed one. Her father was loving enough for both parents. Jaylen and Jason did everything together. Jason was an artist, and Jaylen would always creep in that back room and sneak a peak at his drawings and paintings. He mostly did landscapes, but sometimes, he'd paint dogs or perhaps even people. Jaylen was in absolute awe of her father when she was little. The way he took a picture and brought it to life was unbelievable. She couldn't help but wish to be just like him when she grew up. And, by the age of eighteen, she did. Getting accepted into the Art Institute was a big accomplishment for both Jaylen and her father. Jason had always wanted to go, but his parents never had the money to send him. Now that he was a successful artist, he could change that for his daughter. Everything was great. Jason was at home and Jaylen was at school. Nothing could possibly change their happy family. Until a doctor visit went from a simple check-up to something much more serious. Lou Gherig's disease, they said. Apparently ALS ran in the Tomlin family, and it was a surprise that he had gotten it so soon. Mostly men got it around their sixties and seventies, but her Jason was in his mid-fifties with only two years at most to live. Jaylen rushed home when she found out the news, and after various doctor appointments for new opinions, the poor twenty year old knew that she had to forget her painting and focus on her father. He had spent twenty years of his life taking care of her, and it was her turn to take care of him. For a few weeks, no one said anything. Everyone just kept their feelings bottled up. Jason didn't cry. Jaylen fought back tears as she watched her father slowly become weaker with each passing day. Then, one day, Jaylen finally spoke, asking what her dad wanted to do with the rest of his time. Pulling out a list, there were several things that he had written down since he was just a teenager, and at the bottom it said "Travel the country." Perhaps it was a bad idea, but Jaylen couldn't turn her father down. The two bought a van from the 1960's and piled up everything that was needed to check off the things on Jason's list and headed out. In each state, they would paint the vain a different theme to show off their creativity, but soon that they turned into she when Jason could barely use his hands anymore. Halfway through their trip, things got worst for Jaylen's father, and most of their nights were spent in hospitals. On December 4, Jason suffered no more pain, and everything Jaylen loved was gone. Some say she went a little crazy. Having bottled up all those emotions for so long, showing no sign of sadness or anything, everything came crashing down. Her heart ache turned into anger, and eventually led her to being put into a rehabilitation center by one of her family friend's after Jaylen returned home. Jaylen stayed in the rehab center for about a year, being one of the harder cases to calm down. No one had seen someone so unstable before, especially someone with such a clean record in her past. When she got out, everything was better though. Jaylen learned to control herself, and even learned how to be calm without those horrible pills they made her take. After getting back home, Jaylen couldn't stand the sight of her house. It wasn't the same as it had been when her father was alive. There was no life to it, no happiness. Putting the house up for sell, Jaylen soon made the decision to do the only thing that would have made her dad happy: Finish his bucket list. So, since then, she has been going across the country, staying in crappy motels and soaking up the environment of each city and town. She likes it better that way. Her dad would have loved it that way. Now, she is staying in Vegas for awhile. Maybe she'll find a reason to stay for more than a few months.
