What the hell was Simon Chapman doing at a pet shop. Simon hated pets. If not for the fact that animals all smelled terrible, then for the fact that their expressions were all so sad and searching. The 'cute' just didn't rub him the right why. He kind of wanted to strangle the fluffy little spotted puppy that was wagging its tail and ogling him from the other side of the pane of glass.
Recent events had driven him to get a job, though. It was mostly the fact that his parents were slowly starting to cut him off. One masters card by one. He only had like three left. That sure as hell wasn't enough to maintain his wild, luxurious lifestyle in the borrowed condo in Vegas.
So, it was either Paws Pet Shop, or Micky D's. He really couldn't decide, at this point, which place smelled worse. He told himself for the fifty-ninth time that his decision had been right. At least here he didn't have to wear the ridiculous fast-food uniform. No, just a blue, short-sleeved button-up and a little tag that said, 'Hello, I'm Simon!!!!' Obviously minus a few of the explanation points.
He'd already been told like seven times in this one shift to "Smile more!!" Simon wasn't big on cheery expressions, especially when he was absolutely loathing this job. He'd had to restock the pet food, which smelled awful. He'd had to clean the fish tanks, which smelled awful. And he'd had to brush out the puppies, and those little balls of fur smelled- you guessed it- AWFUL.
An hour and a half left of this shit, and then he'd have money enough to get himself a new blotter sheet from the guy who worked at the shady little pawn shop on the other side of town. He needed something to make this time fly because he was starting to get antsy.
Leaning back against the front display of dog chew-toys, he waved at the customer he'd just finished up with. "Have a great day." He'd managed in a sort of strangled cheerful tone.

Vinny had never been more excited in his life. His mother had agreed to let him have a new pet. Now he wasn't allowed anything important - no puppies, kittens, parrots, dragons - you know, the usual pets. He was allowed fish, which really wasn't as bad as he had thought. Because really, fish were awesome! What other pet could breath under water, fly and even blow bubbles?! To Vinny Christmas really had come early. Together he and his mother had picked a tank for the new arrivals. The filer was in place, the water was warm and the temperature perfect. Food had been bought and was placed in a neat stack in a cupboard under the tank. They had everything except the fish.
Biting his tongue, Vinny walked towards Paws, his money clenched in his fist, making sure he didn't lose any. His mother had asked him to call her the moment he was out of the pet shop so she could collect him in the car and take him straight home. She didn't like it when he walked through the city unattended - who knew what might happen. But she also knew he was a growing boy and needed his space, he may have the mentality of a ten year old, but he was almost double that age.
He took a deep breath before opening the door, his eyes glued to all the of the animals, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He almost couldn't contain it! He wondered briefly what Scout - his old doggy back home - would think of the new addition to the family. He was sure the dog wouldn't mind, Scout was the most laid back animal in the world. Only getting angry when people laughed at Vinny in the street. Just because he was a little different.
Vin almost squealed with delight when he walked up to the counter and saw Simon Chapman standing there, completely unimpressed with the job he was doing. SIMON! Vinny exclaimed, rushing up to the cashier and almost tripping over his shoelaces that were untied, again. I didn't know you worked here! How cool is this! This is..wow..and I like....wow I'm getting fish! he rambled, putting his money down on the counter, a huge grin on his face.

Simon's eyes only widened slightly at Vinny's prompt- and loud entrance. Lips turning up in a mildly amused fashion as the boy stormed up to the counter with a large grin on his face, he raised a brow. Well, Vinny hadn't been exactly what he'd expected to pass the time with, but the animated, bleach-blonde boy would do for now.
"Hey, Vin." He said calmly, folding his arms on the counter in front of him, tilting his head up to look at the other boy.
"Yeah, just started at the beginning of the week." He commented, a bit bitterly. It already felt like a month's time had been wasted in this place, especially since the smell of animals didn't wash out of clothes so well the first- or second- time.
"Fish, huh? Good choice. They're probably the least annoying pet out there." He nodded slowly, So, do you already know what kind of fish you want, or do you need to take a look at the selection?" He asked in a slightly professional manner. He did need this job. It was his only reliable source of cash flow. Who knew when his parents would decide to pull the last one of the credit cards out of his grasp.

Vinny was so excited he was having trouble standing still. He always enjoyed spending time with Simon. They used to hang out sometimes after school when they were younger. But Simon had grown up and left Vinny behind, as most of the boy's friends had done. Simon used to have such a lovely imagination that rivaled even Vinny's. But that was mostly pushed tot he back of his mind, as far as Vinny could see. The shadows had got in, and all Vinny could do was watch as they destroyed his friend.
He took the boy's hand and pulled him around the counter to the fish tanks stacked up on the wall. There were so many colours. So beautiful. He bit his lip and looked to Simon, making grabby hands at the boy, Piggy-back? I can't see them all! he exclaimed, pouting slightly.
He blushed slightly when he realized that Simon was probably too old for that sort of thing. Looking at the floor he muttered a quick, Don't worry...I can stay down here, before Simon got angry.
Pressing his nose almost up against the glass, Vinny watched all the fish for a moment, trying to decide which ones he liked most. He wanted them all, but even he knew that was silly. Which ones are the most talkative? he asked, smiling as a fish came up and bumped the glass by Vinny's hand as if it was saying hello.
