Allie placed both her hands on her brother’s shoulders and took a deep breath. He’d spent the last few weeks crying on her shoulder, and now he was going to Vegas. Allie was torn. On the one hand, her little brother going to Vegas was the last thing she wanted. But on the other hand… He needed to get as far away from everything that reminded him of Jacob as he could. She knew she only hated the boy because he’d broken her brother’s heart, but that didn’t change anything. “Have you got everything you need?” She asked. “All packed? You have money?”
“Yes, Allie.” Julian fought the impulse to roll his eyes at his sister. She was only three years older than him, but there were times when she behaved like their mother.
Allie bit her lip. “I just wanna make sure you’re gonna be okay.” She said. The worse thing Allie could imagine was Julian getting hurt. Again. In any way, shape or form. It was just another reason she had to hate their father. And Jacob. And anyone who might hurt the innocent boy in front of her. “I love you, little brother.” Allie surged forward, wrapping her arms around Julian and pulling him into a hug. “So, so much. You have no idea.” She held on to her brother tighter, blinking back tears that had begun to form.
“I know. I love you, too.” After the… experience with their father – something they didn’t care to talk about – The bond between brother and sister had gotten stronger, unbreakable. Allie was fiercely protective of Julian, and Julian needed her. They were closer to each other than they were to their own mother.
Allie reluctantly released Julian. She reached up to her face and brushed back unfallen tears with her sleeve. “Okay.” Allie chuckled slightly at her rush of emotion. “Don’t take any strange pills. Always watch your drink. If someone asks you if you want to have some fun, the answer is no. And you can always call me if you need to.”
“I know, Allie.” A quick glance to the side told him the bus was pulling up, which meant this was the last he would see of his sister for a while. “I love you. I’ll call you.” He pulled her into a quick hug. This was a good thing. He couldn’t stay with Allie forever, no matter how much he might want to.
Allie watched as Julian boarded the bus, and stayed at the bus stop, waving, until she couldn’t see it anymore.
