Jeremy Fitzroy stood at the doors to the Eastside Asylum with his camera clenched in his hands. He couldn't believe he had talked himself up to actually getting as far as the door. The next stage? Going in.
Yeah. Maybe not yet.
With a slightly forced laugh he sat himself down on the not-so welcoming steps and pulled out his drink. He couldn't quite fathom the possibility that he had made it this far without Tavo or he wished Ryan holding his hand. Fanta was a complete baby when it came to horror movies, and anything to do with scary things. He made sure he always had a blanket or a pillow as protection. But his photography teacher had told him to push his boundaries - and what better way than to get over his fear of...well...most things.
Merda, he swore under his breath, running his hand through his brown mass of unruly hair. Why hadn't he asked someone to come with him? Why did he have to pretend to be so brave?
He looked back at the building that had started to fall into complete disrepair, his stomach clenching in knots. In his opinion it was almost as bad as when his stomach did flips when he saw pictures of that boy pretty boys.
He looked down at his camera, and his drink, and bit his lip. Better get on with it! he thought to himself as he tucked his drink away in his bag and got to his feet. With a sigh he gave the area one last look before walking up to the door and pushing it open.
Fanta, you're either stupid, or you have a death wish, he muttered to himself, his fingers grazing over the old peeling paint.
Walking down the hallway he turned to see the door - which luckily hadn't closed. Come on, you can do it, he told himself as he walked through the old hospital. He could already begin the see the remains of fabrics and chairs, as well as more...dangerous looking equipment.
God he wished Ryan or Tavo was there...or at least someone he could cling to while he took the pictures. What if someone was watching him already?
He hoped they were just there to take in the scenery, not to remove his head from his shoulders....
Suddenly he heard a slam and turned to find the door had finally closed - the hinges so rusted it was a miracle they just hadn't come away from the wall.
Olá? he muttered, bringing his camera closer to his chest, anybody there?

Senseless Denial, We spun like birds on fire right down towards the residence and i I took all that I desired even crooks have to pay the rent We swam like rats on fire right, right down the reservoir We took all that we could carry but we tried to carry more It was Saturday morning and that always meant the same thing if you looked it up in Dexter’s dictionary. Saturday meant get up and about and do something fun with your day that you hadn’t been able to do during the week where you had been working. Unlike most of his colleagues at work just wanted to sit down relax and not do a thing during the weekend because they were exhausted from work, Dexter just had to get up and do something. He had always been bursting with energy early in the Saturday morning, and that had gone on for so long that his parents had started to hate weekends for that reason alone, every weekend he ran into the room early in the mornings to wake them up.
Short in short, Dexter had gotten up, showered, eaten and started thinking through what to do with his day. It had been a while since he just had written he decided, and with that he packed together everything he’d need to be out writing all day. Rufus, the Harlequin Great Dane just got more and more exited the closer that Dexter got upon leaving. And about forty-five minutes after that he had gotten out of bed, both Dexter and the dog left the house, locking the door behind them and walking to wherever the inspiration would strike him. The weather was hot, hotter than usual for the state of Nevada, and Dexter didn’t mind it one bit, he enjoyed the warm weather.
The walk with the dog brought him to the old worn down asylum that hadn’t been used for… for as long as Dexter could remember to be honest. He remembered going in there as a teenager with his friends to see who dared to stay the longest with all the ghost stories that they told one another. But that now felt like a century ago, he couldn’t even remember half of the stories that had been told that evening. Deciding that the asylum would do, he let himself and Rufus in, directly heading to the upper floor where they found a room to sit down in.
Rufus, glad to find a room that was cooler, immediately laid down on the cold floor and sighed heavily. And Dexter just sat down on the floor, leaned against the wall and pulled out his pen and writing block so he could get started. The peace didn’t last for that long, soon, Dexter could hear the door downstairs open and fall shut again, but he didn’t pay much attention to it, people probably came here all the time. After the person spoke up however, Rufus decided that it was time to announce his presence. The enormous dog got up on all four and barked two… three times, the echo of the building making him sound even bigger then he really was. That however made Dexter react, he stopped writing and looked to the dog. “Rufus!” He said on a loud, stern tone. The dog whined and looked at Dexter, then back to the door and whined again. “Rufus, sit down and shut up, leave the poor soul alone.” Dexter added after words. Rufus whined again and sat down on the floor again, but he kept looking to the door as if he waited for the person to make its appearance. “Someone is here, it’s not ghosts you’re hearing!” Dexter spoke again, deciding that he better announce that he was here, rather than ignoring the other person completely.

Fanta liked to pretend to himself that he was brave, that he could handle little noises and pretend they hadn't bothered him. That spiders didn't look out of place with their eight legs and a million eyes. He wasn't scared of the dark, or small spaces and he could easily walk over a bridge without being scared of the height...right? Wrong He was a complete chicken, and he knew it. Even if he tried to hide it amongst his friend - who were all a lot braver than he was, of course.
Taking a deep breath he took another step into the asylum when an almighty howl shook the building. Fanta stood dead still for a second in complete silence. It wasn't a ghost. Was it? No. There was no such things as ghosts or witches or vampires or whatever else Hollywood had come up with. It was probably just the wind whistling through the broken glass and around the deserted halls. Nothing to be scared of.
With another deep breath, Fanta stepped forward again; the wooden floor creaked under his weight. The noise came again, and then again. He could feel his bones shaking and shivering, he should run. Get out of there and never come back, but he was glued to the floor. It wasn't a ghost, it wasn't a ghost, he kept telling himself hoping that he could convince his own mind it really was just the wind.
Then there came a voice, a stern one. Clearer than the howl - was someone else in here? Oh god. They're going to kill me, he thought, looking ahead to the staircase that lead to the other rooms. He hear a slight whine, then a few more words - of which he heard 'Rufus' and 'poor soul', which didn't comfort him in anyway. But curiosity got the better of him and against all common instinct to ruin and hide, he took a few steps forward to reach the bottom of the stairs. Maybe it was just someone visiting, nothing to be scared of.
Fanta stood on the first step just as a reassuring voice confirmed that he wasn't hearing things, and there really was someone else there. Thank god, Fanta muttered to himself as he ascended the staircase. Biting his tongue he reached the top and peered in the first room he came to, only to find it empty. He scowled to himself and poked his head around the next door where he was greeted by a huge dog and...his theatre professor?
Oh, hello sir. I didn't expect to see you here...and your dog, Fanta said, forcing a smile on his face to hide his inner terror at the size of the great dane. Dogs - another thing he didn't like. Still, if he stayed in the doorway and didn't move an inch, maybe the huge animal wouldn't get too close.
Just getting some fresh air? he asked, his heart beat calming down slowly. He made a mental not never to come to asylum on his own again. Ever.

Senseless Denial, We spun like birds on fire right down towards the residence and i I took all that I desired even crooks have to pay the rent We swam like rats on fire right, right down the reservoir We took all that we could carry but we tried to carry more Being scared was something that Dexter had rarely felt during his lifetime, and he knew that the only reason he hadn’t felt scared during his lifetime was because he was too stupid to realize that he should have been scared. As a child he had been blind to dangers, and had never really realized just in how much danger he was until both feet were back on the ground and in front of his mother until she started scolding him. Not that it stayed in his memory for that long however, he always forgot it when something else, equally exiting came along.
Ghost stories didn’t affect him the slightest, he found it fun to hear and watch when it was on tv, he enjoyed thinking of what happened after death and if it was possible to turn yourself into a curse. Yes people, Dexter wasn’t scared of all that many things, except spiders which he only thought was normal. And riding elevators, so what? Half of the population on the world had that little claustrophobic fear. And holes, which… was stupid. But to him it worked the same way as fear of heights worked for someone else, it was an intense fear that he couldn’t explain to anyone at all, he just had it, no matter how embarrassing it was.
The person who had entered the asylum was moving around, and Dexter started writing on the sentence he left of while Rufus still sat on the floor and looked at the door with peaked ears, still expecting that whoever it was came around to talk to them. Rufus was like a big baby, and that was also how Dexter liked to describe his dog. Rufus wouldn’t harm anyone to save his own life and had about the same amount of backbone as a six year old girl watching a horror movie. Always happy and a far to loving animal for its own good, which resulted often in having the dog wanting to crawl up on Dexter’s lap when he watched tv on the evenings, not always the most comfortable idea considering the size of the dog.
Rufus patience did pay off however, and soon someone looked into the room where he was seated which made him stop writing and look up, just to see Fanta Fitzroy in the doorway. Rufus shifted around a bit on the floor, making impatient moves that hinted that he wanted to go over to Fanta, whimpering a little bit and his tail wagging back and forth.
“Afternoon Fanta, I didn’t expect to run into you here either.” He smirked some to him and tapped his pen against the paper that was covered with his handwriting, which could honestly be described as a doctor’s handwriting. And he liked it that way, then he was sure that he could write and no one would copy whatever he wrote. Rufus whined again, still keeping all attention on the boy in front of him which clearly made him uncomfortable. “Rufus that’s enough. Come here and don’t stare at him.” Dexter said and tapped the empty space next to him, Rufus looked to him but didn’t move at first, not until Dexter actually pouted to the dog. Then he got up again, walked back to Dexter and over his legs and laid down on the cold floor again. “Sorry if he scared you by the way, he’s far from as mean as he sounds.” He said and put his hand on Rufus back and patted him, the dogs chest echoing some thumps as he did. Rufus sighed heavily again, and with that the dog relaxed.
“I am killing of my Saturday by actually doing something, what about you, school work?” He asked and pointed to the camera with his pen.

Fanta looked tentatively at the dog, but when it didn't bound towards him he relaxed a little. At least he knew he wasn't going to get killed by a huge dog! He looked at the great dane with a slightly puzzled expression as he watched the dog get up and move closer to his owner. Fanta felt himself blush slightly as Mr Marko asked if he had been scared by the animal.
Shaking his head, Fanta stepped into the room and smiled sheepishly at his teacher. N-no, he didn't scare me. I just didn't expect there to be a huge dog in the middle of an abandoned asylum, he admitted with a nervous laugh. He didn't want his teacher to think he was scared of nearly everything.
Growing up in Rio had subjected the poor boy to annual festivals for the dead. Although it was supposed to be an occasion to remember lost friends, the younger Fanta had been terrified to discover everyone painted skulls on their faces and danced around the streets chanting weird mystic mambo-jumbo. Fanta had never really gotten over his father waking him up at seven in the morning covered in face paint and looking like a skeleton.
Walking into the room properly, Fanta could see where the dust had settled on old equipment. It looked extremely creepy with the cobwebs and the rust. Shivering slightly he looked back at his Professor with another forced smile. Oh, yeah. Photography class, I'm doing a project on architecture and was told this was a good place to visit...well, when I say good- his voice trailed off slightly and he finished with a shrug.
Giving the dog another look he walked over to his professor and leant against the wall next to the man, peering down at the notebook and the scribbled writing. Working on a new script? he asked, the curiosity - again - giving him a little more confidence. Slowly he slid down the wall and sat on the floor, keeping a close eye on the dog. Or are you going to give up teaching and become the next JK Rowling? he added, a slight tease in his tone.

Senseless Denial, We spun like birds on fire right down towards the residence and i I took all that I desired even crooks have to pay the rent We swam like rats on fire right, right down the reservoir We took all that we could carry but we tried to carry more Dexter knew that the size of Rufus could be quite intimidating for someone who hadn’t met the dog before. He had always been forced to warn girls that he took home that he had a huge, very loving and cuddly dog. They never really seemed to take him seriously on the huge part. And to hear Rufus bark in a place like the old asylum, where echo already did it’s natural work and Rufus could sound like some kind of monster… it would even scare Dexter if he didn’t know the animal was there, and then seeing something that huge in a room wouldn’t be comforting either.
“Huh, I just wish he knew how huge he is.” Dexter said and looked to Rufus as he started to scratch him on his stomach, making the dog shift onto his back and slam his large front legs over Dexter’s, shifted his head so it was comfortable and just sighed while he enjoyed the scratching. “He seems to believe he’s some kind of lapdog at the evenings, that he’ll fit all curled up on my lap or something. You should see the look of disappointment on his face when he slides of and hits the floor, it’s like he thinks I’m he bad guy and pushed him of.” Dexter said and couldn’t help but laugh at the memories of it, it had happened so often by now that one would think Rufus would have learned, but alas.
He looked back to Fanta when he started talking on about the assignment he had gotten for his photography class and kept scratching Rufus on his stomach, still holding the pen that he wrote with in his left hand. He smirked and nodded some. “Yeah I got’cha on that, it is a good place for an assignment like that, not to mention that it gives an eerie touch to the photo’s, I like that, creepy pictures.”
He let Fanta lean over to try and read his handwriting, if he managed to or not didn’t bother him that much. It was just ordinary junk that he wrote because he felt like writing. To him there was a difference between writing and creating something, anybody could write but not anybody could create something, and now he was just writing. He chuckled some. “I can’t write well enough to write scripts sadly.” He tapped the pen onto the paper again. “And I wish it was the next Harry Potter story, I’d get myself a boat for that money, but unfortunately, it’s just ordinary junk to waste a Saturday away.”

Fanta crossed his legs over and held his hands over his camera, it was pretty new - a Christmas present from his family back in Rio - so he didn't want to damage it one it's first day out. He smiled when his professor talked about his dog. It was adorable. Fanta could just imagine the huge animal trying to curl up into a smaller space. He had seen millions of videos of dogs trying to sit in small boxes or in cat baskets. Clearly none of them realised the size they were and all thought they were the size of puppies.
He looked back up at his teacher - it was weird seeing Mr Marko out of school. Nice, though, to just have a chat. They spent all of their lessons learning about acting and stage directing and learning lines for productions they would put on throughout the year. Fanta never got any leads, though. He didn't really mind - it just meant he had fewer lines to learn!
How long have you had him? Fanta asked, returning his attention to the dog and away from his professor. He imagined the pair had been together since they were a lot younger - they seemed very close. Maybe if Fanta had grown up with a dog he wouldn't be as worried by them.
Glancing back down at his camera, Fanta raised an eyebrow. You like creepy photos?! he asked, slightly shocked. Though his teacher was probably a lot braver and didn't flinch during horror movies (that Fanta had been forced to watch with his best friend).
Taking another look at the rushed writing, he tried to make out a few of the words. Whatever it was, it looked interesting. Oh, come on sir. Don't say that. I'm sure you could do it, he said with a smile. Everyone's into vampires and stuff these days, so just write about them. I mean, Twilight was shi-shocking but that still made loads of money, he added, trying not to swear in front of his teacher - that just felt odd.

Senseless Denial, We spun like birds on fire right down towards the residence and i I took all that I desired even crooks have to pay the rent We swam like rats on fire right, right down the reservoir We took all that we could carry but we tried to carry more Dexter had actually never planned on getting a dog, he had always liked the animals but he hadn’t intended on getting one of his own. He wasn’t the one who bought Rufus after all. A couple that he was befriended with had gotten the dog in order to patch up their relationship into functioning again, as if they would bond over the dog. But it hadn’t worked and neither of them had wanted to keep the dog after they had broken up. Dexter had agreed on taking care of the dog until they found another home and after a week he had decided that he’d keep the five month old puppy then even if he already was larger than a full grown Golden Retriever.
Ever since then, the two had been best friends and nearly inseparable, at least until Dexter had to go to work or had a date in the evening. Otherwise the two were always found together. Dexter liked having Rufus around, the dog made his day funnier.
“Four, nearly five years now I think.” He murmured, he couldn’t remember how long it had been since Melissa and Jackie had broken up with one another, it was too long ago anyway. By now Melissa was married to some other guy and Jackie lived in with another girlfriend and had a new born daughter with her. “Give or take a couple of months on that.” Everyone around his age was starting to settle down, getting married and having kids, all of his friends had gotten to that stage and he was still single, sometimes it did make him wonder if he did something wrong, but he still considered himself to be too young to settle down.
He nodded at the question if he liked creepy photographs. “I do, they are scary but I like the thrill with them you know? I like whatever sends humanity on edge, except… certain things I actually am scared of.” He had to think of holes when he said that, and even if it was just for a short second he couldn’t help but shiver at the thought, such a ridicules fear. Fear of heights and dogs and water was so much more acceptable, he just got the whole ‘are you stupid’ look or laughter whenever he told people about it.
“Fanta please, no need to call me sir. It’s Saturday so that means no school so technically I’m not your teacher right now, call me Dexter, or Dex, your pick.” He told him then and looked to Fanta shortly before he looked back to the writing and thought of the Twilight vampires as they were being mentioned now. “Ah well, if I write a story about vampires it won’t sell and won’t be popular because there is no way that I’m gonna let my vampires sparkle, they will actually be dangerous and all that stuff. If I could write fantasy, it’s not my strongest genre really. Gangster stories, now that’s something I’m good at when it comes to writing.”

Fanta smiled as he imagined the dog and his own playing together out in the gardens or in the sunshine with some chew toy. Dexter seemed like the perfect person to have a pet dog - Fanta had never seen his teacher in a bad mood or getting angry. Which was nice, for Fanta especially who got into trouble more times a day than he cared to remember. Mr Marko was the only teacher who really just let Fanta be his own person - his other teachers insisted on calling him Jeremy and making sure he was quiet all the time. It wasn't his fault he was a chatty person...well...
He looked over at the pair and was half tempted to reach over and touch the dog on the top of it's head, but he decided against it. As much as he wanted to prove he wasn't scared of the dog, he wasn't about the risk his left hand to prove it. Not that he thought Dexter would just let his dog maul a student. Although, if he bottled up his anger, then maybe he would.
Fanta chuckled slightly when Dexter talked about the creepy photos, Call me old fashioned, but I'd much prefer some flowers, he said with a grin, pressing the cap back on his camera and moving it to one side. He was tempted to ask what Dexter was scared of, but thought it was probably rude; and he didn't want to pry into the other man's business. Usually if you were scared of something, you were scared of it for a reason. He didn't want to make anything uncomfortable between them.
The dark haired boy could feel a slight blush on his cheeks when Dexter allowed him to drop the 'sir'. It felt weird, calling a teacher by their first name. Gangster stories? You should go and find that guy that runs the strip club, apparently he knows all about that kinda stuff...not that I would know...cause...well I've never been to Amnesia...but other people have... Fanta looked away, realising he was digging himself into a hole. He really hadn't been to amnesia - girls taking their clothes off had never really appealed to him. But the way he had said it sounded like he had been. Just, if you need some inspiration or something, he added at the end, hoping to change the subject away from strip clubs.

Senseless Denial, We spun like birds on fire right down towards the residence and i I took all that I desired even crooks have to pay the rent We swam like rats on fire right, right down the reservoir We took all that we could carry but we tried to carry more Dexter knew that students thought of him as a chill teacher, while others were just stiff and didn’t believe in having fun, like the Mathematics teacher. But then he often thought of it, he taught Theatre, he needed his students to be comfortable with themselves, their surrounding and the people around them in order for them to become someone else. If they couldn’t be themselves then how could they act out the role that was handed over to them? He wanted the best result for it all and that was the sole reason why he was teaching the way he did. If he let the students do whatever they liked within boundaries, he could still get enough respect about to pull of whatever he wanted.
One good thing often brought around another good thing, and then you just had to hope that it was something that you wanted it to be. But none of that mattered now, it was Saturday, and the last thing that Dexter wanted to do on a Saturday was to think of various school works, the seniors hadn’t started their final project yet so his weekends were still for himself. He didn’t have to spend his weekends thinking on how to make a play better, or how to express what needed to be expressed. No, it was just personal time for himself and Rufus.
“Flowers are nice.” Dexter hummed. “But, not all that terribly exiting however, and you probably didn’t plan on taking pictures of flowers if you came here. Unless you find some random, flower of death or something I don’t know, whatever flowers they use for horror games.” He thought over the games he had played to see if he could figure out a flower. But he couldn’t come up with anything this second, just a bunch of herbs that he had used countless of times to heal himself with in Resident Evil.
“Oh I’ve been there, and I know the owner to, we chat up every now and then when we run into one another, enjoy drinking at his club to.” Dexter didn’t consider it to be an odd thing to go to a strip club to amuse yourselves. The girls dancing there did it because it was their job, they could always find something else if they wanted to and most of them loved showing of themselves. And as for the people who went to watch, well, it was only natural to have a desire for things like that after all. People got horny. He got horny to, he wasn’t inhuman for that. “It’s been a while since I’ve been there actually.”
